The Moustiers Earthenware Museum showcases the floral designs found on many earthenware pieces dating from the 18th century onwards.
Flowers have always been a source of inspiration for potters. Moustiers is no exception.
Since 1650, local craftsmen have adorned their creations with floral motifs, from glazed earthenware to contemporary faience. Through some fifty pieces, the exhibition showcases the inventiveness of Moustiers’ artists, who draw inspiration from a variety of sources: delicate bouquets, floral patterns, full-page designs...
Some motifs are botanical representations, whilst others evoke the theme in a stylised manner. In the 18th century, flowers often served as complements to the main motifs, whereas from the 19th century onwards they became the central element.
The exhibition gives pride of place to contemporary pieces, thus bearing witness to the vitality of the arts and crafts in Moustiers.
